Hugely affected by your comments re the "night sky" pictures. I suppose it's going to be another of those generational things; like remembering when there was no internet. When I was a child I could see the Milky Way on winter nights from my parents' back garden. In recent years I've seen it occasionally on holday - in v small Greek island villages, & in Cuba. I share your feelings that we have let go of something significant, without realising it's a loss, in losing the night sky.
We have let go of something significant, without realising it’s a loss
is exactly what I was trying to say X
Light pollution is one of those things that illustrates the “shifting baseline problem” in environmentalism. People grow up with one level of light pollution and when they become adults they try to get things to go back to that level—not realizing that their parents had even less light pollution, and their parents even less, and so on. And then each generation keeps thinking the baseline is what they grew up with, and doesn’t try to push it beyond what they knew best.
And light pollution is insidious, because we don’t see it as “pollution”. We see light as the thing that keeps us from falling over things in the dark, and if we proposed taking down any lights people would have a conniption over OMG SAFETY AT NIGHT. Nobody ever thinks to create light sources that keep the streets safer but also keep the light from being too intense, or making sure it only shines down and not out or up.
